SOUND COMPOSITIONS

Suite for Broken Rhodes

This is a 20-minute meditation on the state of decay of a Fender Rhodes piano.  Recorded as an improvisation, this piece was edited,  then transcribed into a unique handwritten score that was pasted up into a large blueprint format.   The music, at times, is  layers of simple patterns á la Philip Glass, sometimes single notes to the point of final decay and sometimes interruptions of  noise and  static.   It also features other aspects of the Rhodes by making full use of its construction -- playing the inside of the piano, using its volume as a hum generator and by layering non-piano and environmental sounds together, "Suite" becomes something else.  Winner of the CCNY 2004 Mark Brunswick Award for Composition.

Sketches of a Groaning Building

"Sketches..." is a 10-minute duo for two double basses and subtle environmental sounds  focusing on little-used sound-areas from the instrument.  Conceived as an exploration of those areas, "Sketches..." also became a transcription project involving the design of a unique handwritten score. It is arranged in eight short sections, some involving notes, most involving some type of bass noise, all revolving around a breathy, circular-bowing centerpiece where the "building comes alive."   Winner of the CCNY 2005 Mark Brunswick Award for Composition.
