‘Answering Machine’ was a culminating, site-specific installation at Ox-Bow, Saugatuck, MI (2012). The installation consisted of several distinct elements: the copper-wrapped stump, an answering machine installed in a tree, a plastic lawn chair with records and documents, a multiband radio set to local air traffic control broadcasts, 1/4 inch tape strung around a large perimeter in the woods and other elements. The work created a space of intensity and listening and suggested the presence/absence of someone engaged in surveillance. The body of the listener is not present, but the markers of presence give the feeling that the listener could be close.
